The idea to write this entry was based on the horrible experience I'm going through now.  It's an easy trap to fall into, students and young artists are always desperate, and there are always people who are going to take advantage of that. Always, always, always.  Never accept cheap or pro bono work, never ever, and I'm not talking about art trades or whatever, I'm talking about legit work.  Industry work.  What happens is that, this gives an excuse, and a profit margin, for the industry to lower the value of the artist.

The clientele are almost never artists themselves, they want to exploit you, get you to do work for shit, and let you think it's helping you in some way.  It's not.  The only way they can help you, is to pay you.  Experience is worth a lot yes, but only if it's in the proper setting and place, and most places that are worth it, generally offer some sort of compensation.

Exposure and Experience are words they use to lure inexperienced artists, honestly, you think someone is going to look at your work and say "Oh, that artist is great.  I will buy everything from that artist."  No, they're going to say "Oh the art is great, I will buy more products from that company."

Someone wrote this on a forum, defending pro bono artists, and while, I do admire their generosity, however, those artists are making it shitty to be an artist. This entire industry is tied together, if artists, want their value to rise, in this economy, they have to set a standard.  That's fucking hard when all artists are already seen as a desperately starving lot.

"So you are calling the people who are willing to do art for people online out of the kindness of their hearts and for online tender bad artists? Im very insulted. Very insulted indeed. Look at people all over the site. There are hundreds, thousands taking art requests. Who are you to judge them, might i ask?"

Again, while that's nice, it really doesn't help us artists as a whole.  The reply to that question... (anger was a factor, lol.)

"Fuck that, you know who they are, do you know what happens when "good artists" do shit for free? And I don't fucking care if it's out of the "kindness" of their hearts, it drives the value of artists down, which is why every tom and joe smartass out there thinks that art is cheap. Those are the people who are doing shit for free, and that supports these preconceptions of artists being poor as shit, because so many people do work for shit. Good artists understand rates, and good artists, understand the industry, and good artists, know what they're art is worth.

I judge them because they don't understand shit. And they don't understand why being an artist is so fucking shitty nowadays. Be insulted, you're part of the problem. You're the reason people don't fucking respect artists. Are you happy now?"

Anyways, the moral, if you're good at something, make sure to NOT DO IT FOR FREE.  Not only will you're livelihood improve, you'll improve the industry, and most importantly, it will educate the clients into knowing what are acceptable rates. And do a lot of research, a shit ton of research, don't get taken for a patsy.  I write all this because I've just gotten a job, and it's slowly turned into a soul sucking wreckage of despair, I haven't gotten paid yet, I hate my boss and there's absolutely no experience or exposure in this fucking deal that can help me.

P.S.  Awesome video, just replace writer, with artist, and you have the state of the industry in a nutshell.
